Piercing After Care
Recipe: If you are making your own saline solution, the proper ratio is 1/4 teaspoon of sea salt to 1 cup of clean warm water (distilled water, bottled water or boiled tap water).
How to Soak: Pour your saline solution into a clean container and warm it in the microwave (the solution should be the temperature of a drinkable warm beverage). Always test temperature before soaking.
- Soak your piercing in saline solution for 5-10 minutes, at least 1-2 times a day optimally prior to showering so you can rinse well so you don't dry out your healing piercing and irritate skin.
- Depending on the location of your piercing, a mug, class, or shallow bowl can be good (a shot glass is perfect for navel or nipple piercings) or saturate a sterile gauze pad or cotton ball to form a small compress for hard-to-soak spots.
- Always remember to rinse with clean water after soak!
Do Not: Soak your healing piercing in any form of water (i.e. hot bubs, pools, baths, or lakes) showering is okay.
Oral Piercing Aftercare

Ice: Suck on chipped or shaved ice made from clean water, or small cubes of frozen chamonmille tea (big cubes can be uncomfortable and irritating).
Elevation: Sleep with your head propped up on an extra pillow the first few nights; keeping your head above your heart helps to minimize overnight swelling.
NSAIDs: Take over-the-counter, non-steroidal anti inflammatory medications according to the package instructions.
Rinsing: Your primary aftercare for oral piercing (include tongue, labret, and lip) will consist of rinsing your mouth with an antibacterial or antimicrobial mouthwash for 30-60 seconds, rinse up to 5 times daily; after meals and before bed.
Keep Mouth Clean: Your piercing is an open wound so no bodily fluids from others, including saliva. Do not chew on pens, sunglasses, fingernails, or other foreign objects; they harbor germs and bacteria!
